Tope, you are welcome to the Australasian Christian Writers’ blog

What does your writing routine look like?

Hmmm. Routine? I’m not sure I have a routine per se. But I try to write when the children aren’t home or are asleep. So mornings or night works for me

How long does it take to complete your book—writing to publishing?

I’ll say about 6-8 months. It could take longer depending on the size of the book and other unplanned factors, but I’ll say 6 months on the average. Life gets in the way and I get back in its way. Being a mum of 3 kids under 10 has its challenges.

Do you plan your stories in detail or discover them as you write?

No. I’m not a plotter. I write as the stories come. Sometimes I like having the book title and an idea of the cover to boost inspiration. Honestly, I hit roadblocks wondering what’s going to happen next. In those moments, I learn to trust God and rely on Him for the next step. And not once has God disappointed or led me astray. Usually, it’s at the end that I see what God had started from the beginning and it makes me happy that I went along in obedience because it’s a learning for me as well… To trust God.

What keeps you going when writing is difficult?

I go back to God in prayer. My husband always likes to ask if I have prayed about it. Also, I take a walk to clear my head. Sometimes I read a book or watch a movie.

What books or authors that influence your work?

Nicole Deese, T. I Lowe, Francine Rivers, Karen Kingsbury. Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers was an eye opener for me. It made me realise there can both be romance and deep godly truths in a book. I loved it so much. I must have read it about three times.

How does your background or environment shape your storytelling?

Well.. I remember when I first started out writing I did it as a form of an escape from the issues happening at home. And so I saw writing as a form of comfort. I wanted to understand what love was all about. Hence I read books (fiction and non fiction) to understand it and I was swayed in that direction. At first, I started writing to people from broken homes and on relationships. But I believe as the years have gone by, the writing has become more of seeking answers to certain questions and allowing God give me the answers in story form.

Is there a message you hope readers take personally from your books?

Yes. I hope they come to the understanding and realisation of God’s love for us and how intimacy with Him can be. My motto is writing God’s heart and my desire is God uses me to send clear messages to whoever is reading what he inspired me to write.

What is your current WIP about?

For four years now I’ve been writing books in the Flower series, which has 5 main books, and a prequel. I’m currently working on the Christmas story (yeah I know Christmas is over but I couldn’t meet up with my deadline). It’s about a woman who finds it hard to believe God is merciful enough to give her a second chance and a man who can’t forgive others no matter how much they’ve changed.

It’s been lovely chatting with you, Tope! Looking forward to having you again here on the Australasian Christian Writers blog. Thank you for your time. Keep inspiring and entertaining us with your beautiful Christian novels!
