Book description

In the stark but beautiful wilds of northern New Mexico, a luxury spa and couple’s retreat turns into a chilling nightmare when a woman vanishes without a trace, just hours after a public fight with her boyfriend. Worried something sinister has happened, her friends reach out to investigator Riley MacLeod, an expert skip tracer, for help. The assignment means going undercover at the retreat, which means pairing up with private investigator Greyson Chadwick. Their partnership ignites a tumultuous mix of attraction and distrust as Riley’s unorthodox methods clash with Greyson’s meticulous approach.

As they delve deeper into the case and a ruthless hitman is unleashed upon them, Riley and Greyson find themselves fighting not only for justice but for their very survival. Staying one step ahead of danger, the pair discovers a hidden truth that rocks them to the core. In their race against the clock, they can only hope that they’re not too late.

With her signature pulse-pounding twists, Dani Pettrey weaves a gripping tale of love and survival in the face of unimaginable danger.

My Review

Thanks to Justread tours for my review copy.

This is the second book in this series and we are back in Jeopardy Falls New Mexico. This time Riley MacLeod is the main character. She teams with Greyson Chadwick a co-worker to investigate a friend’s disappearance. Her brothers are also back as they are partners in the Investigation business. This book is action packed right from the start.

It didn’t take long to remember the characters from the first book in the series. The opening scene has Riley in a life and death struggle which will play out through the book. What happens gives her nightmares which she has to deal with. At the same time Greyson is also dealing his own struggles from the past.

Riley and Greyson have to pose as a married couple at a retreat to look for clues on a friend’s disappearance which leads to dangerous situations. At the same time fighting an attraction for each other. Riley has grown to have feelings for Greyson that she is sure he doesn’t return. We find out Greyson feels the same way. While navigating danger they are navigating their feelings. Added to the tension is Greyson dealing with past issues that he blames himself for.

The suspense is there from the start and picks up as the book continues. It’s not just the missing friend in danger. Riley has also become a target. Which in turns means Greyson is too. The fact this book is set in December with snow and cold seems to add drama in my eyes. I always find the cold element makes the suspense feel more intense for me. I also found as I got into the book the more I didn’t want to put it down, knowing what would happen next.

This book has the right amount of romance and suspense and deals with forgiving one’s self. Both Riley and Greyson have things they are struggling with and we see them work through the issues. It wasn’t an easy fix but was a natural progression. I don’t like that I have to wait another year for the next book but will be looking forward to it. Dani writes wonderful Romantic Suspense. If you like suspense where you feel the danger check this book out. If you haven’t read book one you won’t be confused reading this book.

  1. Thanks Jenny. I’ll have to add that to my list. I’ve read Dani Pettrey’s Alaskan Courage series and Coastal Guardians series and really enjoyed them. I somehow missed Book 1 in the Jeopardy Falls series, so will have to go back and read that one first. Romantic suspense is my favourite genre.

    1. Thanks for commenting Nola, I read Dani for the first time last year with book one and was hooked. And reading book one sets this one up to a degree mainly cos you have a bit of an understanding of Riley and to a bigger extent Greyson. I had shied away from some of the suspense authors due to thinking the suspense was a little too much but reading this one helped me see its Thriller more so then suspense that I was avoiding. This and cozy mystery are becoming my favourite genres. (my tbr list has a couple of middle grade books then one contemporary, and I think the rest are romantic suspense. (And I need to read Iola Goulton’s latest release).

      1. Hi Jenny – I don’t like scary thrillers either, especially any that are a bit more graphic or verging on horror. But most of the Christian authors I’ve read in that genre are good. Many of Susan May Warren’s are also romantic suspense (though some more than others). I also like Terri Blackstock, Colleen Coble and some of the earlier Dee Henderson (not so much the recent books). But if you enjoyed the Dani Pettrey one you read, check out the Alaskan Courage series next.

        1. I have a few Love Inspired Suspense books to read. I love them too and some are more suspenseful than they use to be. I had to read a couple suspense books (not with romance) and they were edge of you seat scary not horror but heartbeating scary. and a one I can’t pronounce the genre but in (genre like handmaidens tale) it was in the future when computers etc were no longer and anyone different was hunted down. I still remember the 2 attack Dobermans and how scary they were when they found someone. While it was a good book its not my cup of tea it was too violent.

  2. Hi Jenny, My paperback copy of Two Seconds Too Late is waiting for me to collect at my PO Box. I loved the first book in the series and I’m looking forward to having time to dive into this one. Thanks for sharing your review with us. 😊
