A Million Holy Moments
If you’ve read any of my blog posts over the last little while, you would know that there have been some challenges happening in life. Life on the whole is good, but there are little challenges that we deal with that are at times annoying, at times heartbreaking, and most of the time, out of our control. And when life is littered with little annoyances, they can turn into big annoyances.
So I find myself asking God how best to navigate these little irritations without losing my peace and joy, and on a standard Wednesday night, God showed me how we can experience holy moments that remind us that God is near to us.
After dinner, as we sat around the lounge room being warmed by the fired, Rowan strumming his guitar and singing, our little one started dancing around the house. We sang worship songs, and she danced and laughed and we talked. It was sweet and I found myself looking around and feeling a deep sense of peace and an awareness that God was with us. This was a holy moment. Sitting by the fire, God’s presence was felt, and I was reminded that holy moments come in all shapes and sizes.
God’s In The Little Moments
We often look for God in the big moments in life. Life and death and big decisions and heartfelt prayers. And He is absolutely in all those moments. But He is also in the little moments. The mundane and routine. He is with us when we are driving to an appointment. He is with us when we are sipping on a coffee. God is with us when we are cooking and eating and doing all the things we don’t often think too hard about.
Those little moments are holy, too, because they are where we see God in the detail. When we see the butterflies and are reminded that God made their beautiful wings and created a way for them to eat and survive. When we are creating food and remember that God gives us breath and a functioning body that moves and makes things. Not everyone has a body and/or mind that allows them to freely move around and make a meal.
Little Holy Moments
If we look hard enough, we will all find a million little holy moments with God.
I have found holy moments talking to a friend on the phone and sharing laughs and hurts and fears and hopes.
It’s found having church around the dinner table with people that are near and dear and desire to seek God with their whole hearts.
A holy moment is in the car listening to worship music and having lyrics speak straight to your heart.
It’s found standing in the yard and watching multiple butterflies flutter by, showcasing God’s beauty creation.
Every Moment Holy
1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us to, “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” When life is hard, the greatest thing we can do is look for God in the everyday. If we look for Him in the morning, we will find Him waiting with open arms. We find Him when we thank Him for another day. We find Him when we thank Him for bringing certain people into our lives to love and support us. We’ll find Him when we stop and thank Him for giving us breath in our lungs so that we can love Him and love others. And all those things are holy because they are moments and circumstances and relationships ordained by God.
He made the sun and the moon and the heavens and earth and we get to enjoy them. That’s holy. He made us for communion with Him and with others and that’s holy, because He ordains it and allows it.
As we go about our days and weeks, may we aware of the holy moments that God creates for us to encounter Him.
