Dwelling and Resting:
Psalm 91 verse 1- 2 and 9 -10 NIV
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Verse 2. I will say of the Lord “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
This year personal circumstances have led me to dig deeper, go higher and to reach wider into dwelling in the shelter of the Most High. Imperfectly, yes. The reward of dwelling according to this scripture is resting in the shadow of the Almighty (Verse 2, NIV).
Resting is not something I naturally excel in, the physical and definitely not in the spiritual. For myself, it’s not so much a physical place as it is a Person and His nature.
When I speak and declare truth over the very dark shadows of life about the very nature of God, I am agreeing with the truth the Psalmist has written.
The psalmist who wrote Psalm 91 gets straight to the point- in verse 2 – I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
In verse 9 the Psalmist continues- If you make the Most High your dwelling-even the Lord, who is my refuge-verse 10- then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.
Imagine the rest of making the Most High Himself, your permanent dwelling. However, there is an If at the start of verse 9 (NIV). It is conditional. But it is possible or the psalmist would not have added verse 10 and proceeding verses.
This is where I long to be. What about you?
Where are you dwelling?
Are you making the Most High your dwelling or are you dwelling in a false refuge?
If we see ourselves as seated in heavenly places which is our address as new covenant believers, then we can receive the rest that dwelling in the shelter of the Most High brings. Even greater than this is to accept the invitation to make the Most High your dwelling-even the Lord, who is my refuge.
I have been known to dwell on the past which leads to no where new, no expansion of spirit, certainly no shelter or rest. Has this ever been your experience?
This lighthouse pictured speaks to me of a strong fortress, safety, a haven, protection from trouble. If you liken a lighthouse to your faith, dwelling in the Person of the Most High is where the psalmist is encouraging you to go in verse 9 NIV.
Go to that place within, the inner man, the place where rivers of living water pool and swirl, inviting your response.
Wonderful. Thank you, Lorraine.
