DEVOTIONS: A Broken Song to the Perfect One

Do you ever feel like a broken song playing on repeat?

Sometimes I feel as if I’m a broken record, bringing the same tune to the Lord over and over. Help me, Lord; take away the pain, Lord; fix the situation, Lord; bring restoration, Lord; help me to do the right thing, Lord. I often wonder if God gets tired of hearing the same broken lyrics of my song. I know I do.

But, God. God in His love and grace and gentleness reminded me through a song the other day that He welcomes my broken song. The lyrics of Rend Collective’s song, Simplicity, sing:

I come with my broken song,

To you the perfect One.

A broken song, sung to the perfect One.

It doesn’t make sense that we would sing a broken song to a perfect God, but the reality is we all come with a broken song to the perfect One, because we are all broken people. We hurt. We cause hurt. Our hearts long for desires to come true. We worship God yet feel anger towards Him. It’s a cycle that we all go through in some way. This life we live on earth is a continuous circle of different seasons. And all those experiences culminate in a broken song that we sing to God over time.

But, God.

God, in His holy temple, is the perfect One that can take our broken song and make it a beautiful symphony. He can take our broken words and fears and feelings and make something beautiful out of it. He can take our song of heartache and turn it into a song of worship. When in His hands, our song of despair becomes one of praise. Because He is the perfect One.

He took a brutal death on a Cross and in turn gave us sweet redemption and grace. Only God can take the broken and put it back together in a way that is more beautiful than ever before. And so, I bring my broken song to His altar once again, knowing that when I sing it to Him, He will make beautiful music out of it.

Beauty from ashes.

In Isaiah 61:3, there is a beautiful promise of restoration for God’s people:

and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
the oil of joy instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.

God promises redemption, and He is faithful to His Word.  Where there is ashes and ruble, God will recreate something beautiful. Where there is mourning, God will pour out His oil and joy and dancing. When discouragement and heartache scream for attention, singing and declaring His praises will silence the despair. He is faithful to restore and redeem. In His gentleness. the Holy Spirit will settle our hearts. And the power that raised Jesus from the grave; the power that is within us (Romans 8:11) will enable us to overcome what this world throws at us.

  1. Thank you for your post, dear Lays, it lined up with my reading this morning. Romans 8 reveals the Holy Spirit takes what’s deep in our heart and gives it to our Father. Sometimes we hurt so much we don’t have words, but He knows. He cares. I’m working through this after losing my beloved husband of 60 yrs. Of all the beautiful songs I could sing, the only one I sang aloud was the one I sang to my dear man helping him to walk in those last few days of his life. “Little by little, one step at a time, He’s changing our hearts and renewing our mind . . .” My cracked and teary voice would’ve sounded laughable to anyone, but not to the Lord. He knew I was trying to thank Him for His loving presence through my grief. After I post this I’m going to sing, “This is the day that the Lord has made.” I’m going to sing it loud & clear and I know He will continue giving me His joy that never ends, no matter what. I truly understand this quote, “feelings come & feelings go, And feelings are deceiving. My hope is in the Word of God, naught else is worth believing.” I’v been up & down, but I know the Lord NEVER changes.

    1. Thank you for sharing, Rita. And I have no doubt that every song you sing to the Lord is a beautiful symphony to His ears. And I love that quote, “My hope is in the Word of the Lord, naught else is worth believing” Amen! X
Praying for you in this season x

  2. Love this post, Lays!
Thank you for reminding us all that we will only find healing and restoration through bringing our “broken song” to the feet of Jesus.

  3. Thanks, Lays, for the ever-true reminder that God’s love is evergreen. I’m so grateful his boundless love is not dependent on my perfection (or else I’d be totally screwed!) but on my willingness to worship him just as I am – broken, vulnerable, honest. And I don’t think he ever tires of it. In fact, I kinda think he likes those songs and acts of worship the best.
