Fiction Friday | Break My Fall by Lynn H. Blackburn

Today for Fiction Friday I’m sharing my book recommendation for Break My Fall, the second book in Lynn H. Blackburn’s Gossamer Falls romantic suspense series that’s releasing on March 18, 2025.

Here’s the Book Description:

She’s determined to make an impact in her community.
He’s determined to make sure she lives long enough to do it.

Dr. Meredith Quinn always planned to return to Gossamer Falls to practice dentistry. Now that she’s back home, she’s made it a point to offer clinics to children and adults in nearby underserved areas. Unfortunately, those same areas are known to harbor drug traffickers, and Police Chief Grayson Ward suspects that local law enforcement is looking the other way.

After too many losses, Grayson has closed off his heart. But with Meredith in his life, he feels his walls crumbling, leaving him exposed and vulnerable. To keep her alive, he must keep her close, but that makes it impossible for him to retreat and rebuild.

Will she be the one who finally helps him emerge from isolation? Or will this force of nature leave him shattered?

Narelle’s Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading Break My Fall, the second book in Lynn H. Blackburn’s Gossamer Falls romantic suspense series set in the western North Carolina mountains.

Meredith Quinn is a dentist who moved back home to Gossamer Falls to help her family when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She’s very close to her brother, Mo, and cousin, Cal. They all built tiny homes next door to each other on a section of Quinn land near the river.

Gray is the police chief who moved to town a few years ago. He’s good friends with Cal, but Gray has a complicated relationship with Meredith. Gray believes he can’t pursue a romantic relationship with Meredith, despite their attraction, because of his childhood trauma from losing loved ones. Meredith is frustrated that Gray seems to view her as a friend and keeps her at arm’s length.

Gray has concerns about the criminal activities taking place in the county next door. It’s not his jurisdiction and the police chief there seems to ignore the problems in the community. Gray is in contact with law enforcement agencies who are investigating the situation.

Meredith travels around the mountains doing charity dental work to help the people living in isolated communities. She talks with her patients, including children, and hears about the problems they’re facing. Meredith wants to help them, not thinking that her help could bring trouble her way.

Someone sabotages Meredith’s work van, stranding her on a mountain road leading into town. Gray is in the vicinity doing police work and assists her. They soon discover Meredith’s life is in danger, but they don’t know why.

The perilous situation forces Gray and Meredith to spend time together and they can’t deny their unresolved feelings. The impending danger raises the stakes and forces them to deal with their emotional baggage. I loved how Gray and Meredith were authentic and honest in how they worked through the obstacles in their romance.

The Quinn family are tight knit, and the side characters play an important role in the story. Family is the cornerstone of their community and they all help each other during a crisis. The suspense plot kept me guessing, and I appreciated how it unfolded in an action packed ending.

I recommend Break My Fall to romantic suspense readers who like small town second chance romances with unrequited love, family drama, an intriguing suspense plot, and a relevant faith element in the story.

Many thanks to Revell and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy.
