Friday Fiction | Regaining Mercy by Carolyn Miller Book Review

Book Review of Regaining Mercy by Carolyn Miller out Tuesday 30 June.

A mom ready to do anything for her son. A man determined to win the woman he loves.

Going on Love at First Glance had seemed like such a good idea. She didn’t care about finding Mr. Right. No, Mindy Murray chose the reality TV show for more mercenary reasons. A mom’s gotta do what a mom’s gotta do when it comes to feeding her son.

When Mindy returns to Elnora, the girl from the “wrong side of the island” just wants a chance to rebuild her reputation. Too bad the folks at church don’t practice what the preacher preaches.

Enter Dermott Reilly. The interim boss at Greener Gardens has always had a soft spot for Mindy and her son, but with his new responsibilities, an important garden competition, and a few other concerns, he finds it difficult to prove himself to her.

A tropical storm and a missing child prove that sometimes grace appears in the most unusual ways.

Regaining Mercy concludes the Elnora Island romances of the Independence Islands Series, featuring five islands, six authors, and a boatload of happily ever-afters.

The Independence Islands Series: beach reads aren’t just for summer anymore.

My review

Having enjoyed Carolyn’s first book in this series Restoring Fairhaven and was looking forward to this book and I wasn’t disappointed. I am still not reading as much as I would like and started this book and read half the book in on sitting. It would have been finished the following night if not for being exhausted.  From the first scene I was hooked.

The book starts with Mindy working as a cashier dealing with difficult customers who look down on her due to her being on a reality show. One older customer is being extremely difficult and Mindy says something that gets her in trouble. Another customer Dermott comes to her aid only to make things worse. Dermott worked for with her brother and has been looking out for her.

Mindy has a young son Jon who has social difficulties and is now friends with the little girl next door. She needs her job to look after him. This is where Dermott comes up with a suggestion.

Mindy is full of self doubts and low on self confidence and feels everyone is looking down at her. Because of this she often thinks people are constantly judging her. I love the way Carolyn shows how easy it is for people to lack self confidence and feel this way. Seeing Dermott wanting to help and working out what to do is interesting. I also love the neighbour who also wants to help.

If you enjoy Christian Contemporary I am sure you will enjoy this book. The location on the islands and island life makes it even more special. Can’t wait for the next Island to be featured.

Thanks to the publisher for my review copy

  3. I read ‘Restoring Fairhaven’ and enjoyed it, so it will be interesting to see this one unfold. The reality TV angle sounds interesting. Hope it goes really well.

    1. The reality TV is prior to the book but has an affect on Mindy throughout the book.

  4. I enjoyed reading “Restoring Fairhsven”. We were in the new Toowoomba Koorong store today and it was good to see Carolyn’s books there as well as Nola’s “Scattered”.
