If you want to see your calling fulfilled, you have to stop with the lame excuses. Trust me, you won’t get far carrying that bed. The mattress is cumbersome and awkward, full of all the lame excuses you’ve justified to yourself and to God over the years.
I know all about lame excuses because that was me. From telling God that I have no qualifications to not being as good as other writers, I came up with every lame excuse I could think of. But then I realised something. If I wanted, I mean really wanted to see my dream become a reality, I had to stop carrying that bed full of lame excuses.
I had made a cosy little mattress that was stuffed full of excuses which I carried around with me every time God prodded me to take another step toward my calling. Excuse after lame excuse came out of my mouth whenever I prayed. Well, I called it praying, but God just called it whinging and whining. He waited patiently until the last balloon popped at my pity party before He showed me that I wasn’t getting very far because I was carrying a bed full of lame excuses.
My wise daughter said to me, “Mum, you’re at an age now where you can do anything you want to.” Really? You mean there is an “age” where you get to actually choose what you want to do with your life?
I realised I had been looking at my past instead of fixing my eyes on my future. The past where I had become lame through my excuses. And like the man in John chapter 5, who had been sitting on his mat at the pool of Bethesda for 38 years, I too, was waiting for someone to put me in the pool for my miracle.
Jesus asks him, “What can I do for you?” The man replies,“Sir, I have no man to put me in the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”
Sounds like a lame excuse. But aren’t we the same? Our answer is Jesus, and he’s standing right in front of us asking what he can do to help. And all we can do is whinge at Jesus that there is no one to help us get to our dream.
We need to recognise when Jesus is standing right in front of us, telling us to get up and walk. Fear stops you from stepping out into the unknown, until it has paralysed you into not doing anything that will help you fulfil your calling.
God believes you are the right person for your dream and He’s not going to listen to your lame excuses as to why it’s impossible and cannot be done. He just wants you to trust Him. He believes in you. You’ve got this, my friend.
So, stop carrying that bed around with you. Get up, rise and walk in the direction of your dream. Stop with the lame excuses because you won’t get far carrying that bed!

Wow, this is all so true and it makes complete sense! Thank you so very much for all these helpful words! Isn’t Awesome when our children show us and tell us what is right and how they are there for us to cheer us on? well my friend you just did that for me, we all need more people like you. God bless you and your family. Thank you for posting this. 🙂
Hi Alicia,
Yes, our children seem to see the obvious answers way before we do! Thank you so much for your kind words.
Keep walking and leave that bed full of excuses behind! W x
Wow!
This really hit me hard and just what I needed on this Easter Monday morning.
As I was reading it I could hear all the lame excuses I’d been using over the years as well as allowing fear to hold me back.
Thank you!
Hopefully not too hard, Carole!
Yes, fear is what drives or excuses. Spot on!

Great post. I love the wisdom of tour daughter. Lame excuses can be an issue as can not-so-lame excuses, but we don’t get anywhere unless we keep moving forward.
Totally right, Susan!

“I too, was waiting for someone to put me in the pool for my miracle.” That right there is an incredible and profound statement that would resonate with a lot of people, myself included. Thanks for sharing, Wendy x
You are so welcome, Lays xx
