Devotional | The Importance of Our Calling

If we know what it is that Jesus wants us to be, if we have been given a vision (an idea, a dream, a promise) showing us a clear direction from Him, then we must be obedient to that Calling. It is not up to us to say it cannot be achieved or attained for we know that with God all things are possible (see Matthew 19:26).

Personal

Each person’s Calling is personal which means that it starts with our relationship with Jesus, we then have to be ALL about Him not the cause itself. What does this look like? Well, the apostle Paul declared that he had been crucified with Christ, meaning his old identity no longer drove him. Paul was once Saul of Tarsus a Pharisee determined to eradicate Jesus’ followers, he approved the stoning of Stephen and he also dragged both men and women out of their homes where he imprisoned them to inflict torture and eventual death. But after his encounter with Jesus, on the Road to Damascus (see Acts 9:1-20), rather than persecuting Christians he went into synagogues preaching about Jesus and proclaiming that Jesus was indeed the Son of God! (verse 20). From that moment on Paul was completely and utterly tied to Jesus, seeing himself as 1 with Him, declaring that it was no longer him that lived but Jesus Christ who lived in him. Paul lived by his faith in Jesus, he believed in Jesus’s great love from Him by adhering to and relying completely on Jesus (Galatians 2:20). That’s what we should strive to emulate, let’s adhere to, rely on and completely trust the Son of God and His love for us! Let it be the focus of our lives, the driving factor, the thing that gets us out of bed in the morning. Let your relationship with Jesus be the focus that drives your Calling or vision.

Dream

My Call to write happened a long time ago, I remember in my teens wanting desperately to become a writer but then life got busy and apart from journaling I didn’t really write. Then in my 30’s I felt a stirring to write about my journey with endometriosis, after months of work my computer died and I again gave up. When I was sick in 2014, I again felt the stirring to write and in 2016 I felt really prompted again to document my endo story and other ideas flowed as well. But here I am 50 years old and I have to admit I haven’t always given my writing the importance in my life that I should. I had a dream in August 2025 where a friend wouldn’t catch up with me because she didn’t want to be a distraction to my writing. I felt it was a reminder to remember the importance of my Calling and so a couple of days later I sat down and put this devotion into action.

Pace yourself

If I’ve learnt anything this past 12 years it’s that my body has limitations (hopefully just for now) and when fatigue floods my being with weakness I have to listen and rest. For a long time I resisted that need for rest, even resented it, but It has been a journey that God has patiently taken me on, one of showing me that rest is ok, in fact I read Alabaster Co’s book “Towards Rest” this year and it opened up my eyes to seeing rest in a whole new way. One quote that really hit my heart was “Rest is not a luxury, afterthought or feature of entertainment. It is an essential, holy aspect of life as it was meant to be.” I urge you to be kind to yourself, try to set realistic goals as this will boost your sense of accomplishment and spur you to keep going.

Produce

A brand new fresh and vibrant year stretches before us like a blank canvas, we can be the painters that decide what that canvas produces, we can set ourselves some goals with the hope that this will be the year of opportunity. But what if it is another year full of challenges? Whatever the future holds let’s endeavour to start putting idea(s) into motion, or building upon what we have started, let’s keep chipping away at projects and creep ever closer to making that Calling a reality. Remember with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).

What is a goal you’ve set for yourself for this year? I’d love to hear all about it.

Many blessings
