Tuesday Book Chat | 10 February 2026

Welcome to Tuesday Book Chat.

This is where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week. As we are a faith-based group the questions refer mainly to Christian fiction or non-fiction.

Today’s question is:

Does being added to newsletter lists influence your decision to enter contests?

We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please join in the conversation by commenting on this post or on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group. Remember to comment today on Tuesday Book Chat to enter the giveaway.

Let’s chat!

Yes. I did enter a big contest last year knowing this would happen and dreaded it. Why because so many have that dreaded welcome sequence. Last year I decided as an experiment to see what would happen. This year if I do enter a contest with this condition if I am not interested in the genre the author writes I will auto unsubscribe. If there is the welcome sequence I will probably unsubscribe also. So far this year I have decided not to enter a couple of contests cos I just can’t handle the newsletters. Ironically from the Christmas in July contest I got yet another newsletter from an author 6 months after the contest.

Your turn.

I look forward to reading your comments here or at the FB group.

Comment on today’s post to enter the Tuesday Book Chat quarterly e-gift card giveaway sponsored by Narelle Atkins. Two winners per quarter, $10 US or $15 Aussie e-gift cards.

The winners can choose between an Amazon.com or Kobo USD $10 gift card, or an AUD $15 gift card from Amazon Australia, iBooks, Kobo.

  1. It can if there are a lot of authors newsletter sign-ups. If it is something I’m really interested in, then I will, no matter what. However, if I like it , but don’t always read them, I probably wouldn’t so I don’t get too much more overwhelmed with newsletters.

    1. I understand. I created a new folder for last years giveaway but it gets tiring. I now will only sign up if its something I really want to win.

  2. Yes, it turns me off if there are multiple authors. If it’s one or two, that’s fine, because I’m choosy who I sign up for. But then I’m really picky which newsletters I’m on anyway. Otherwise, I’d never read them all.

    1. I fully agree. I found with the ones last year with the sequence you get a little at a time and this year if I join they will have lost me at the first one.
Those I kept were the ones with either a welcome to my newsletter this is who I am, this is what to expect, this is how often I send. That way I knew what I would be getting and if I was interested. For good measure some wrote if you want to unsubscribe as I know my newsletter isn’t for everyone (or words to that effect) I understand and feel free to unsub at the bottom. A couple of those I stayed just because they were understanding. but of the 70+ I probably stayed on 5 or 6 that i wasn’t already a member off.

  3. If signing up for newsletters is a requirement to enter a competition, then I won’t enter.
There are only a couple of author’s who I have subscribed to newsletters, and neither of those were associated with a competition, purely because I wanted to know when they were putting out new books.

  4. It didn’t use to matter until I realized I was spending all my time reading newsletters for authors that I don’t even read books for. I am still unsubscribing every day trying to get a handle on my inbox, so I’m careful now and pick and choose.

    1. I fully understand, I still get newsletters from people I don’t read or even know off.
