Tuesday Book Chat | 10 June 2025

Welcome to Tuesday Book Chat.

This is where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week. As we are a faith-based group the questions refer mainly to Christian fiction or non-fiction.

Today’s question is:

Do you read Devotional Books?

We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please join in the conversation by commenting on this post or on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group. Remember to comment today on Tuesday Book Chat to enter the giveaway.

Let’s chat!

Yes. I normally have one on the go for each morning. They will change as I finish one and start a new one. I do reread them but love finding a new one that works for me. In the coming weeks we go more into this question.

Your turn.

I look forward to reading your comments here or at the FB group.

Comment on today’s post to enter the Tuesday Book Chat quarterly e-gift card giveaway sponsored by Narelle Atkins. Two winners per quarter, $10 US or $15 Aussie e-gift cards.

  1. I read them to my kids but not for myself. I prefer commentaries if I get stuck and need some help. But I do find they help a lot for my kids!

    1. I know we had some as kids. I am now sure when we were younger as after dad had his stroke when I was 8 everything changed.

  2. Yes. I have a couple on the go most of the time – one for the morning and a different one at night.

  3. Hi Jenny – I’ve used a lot of them over the years, ranging from the the magazine-style ones like Selwyn Hughes’ ‘Every Day With Jesus’ to the one-year devotionals that cover a particular theme or book of the Bible. If it’s a short one that gives a verse and a brief reflection, I might read that and then also look at another Bible passage myself. But some of the meatier ones have extra verses you can look up and some questions to think about. I tend to like the ones with applications. I’ve even done some in the last couple of years that also included colouring pages related to the passage for that week and found it quite a meditative way to think about a key verse.
There are some I’ve started and abandoned because I didn’t like the style or they weren’t in-depth enough. But there are so many on the market, it’s easy for people to find one that suits them.
So yes, I’m a big fan of devotionals.

    1. Im like you have have started some but didn’t finish or get into cos they just didn’t gel. I like the verse and thought and prayer. The one right now is a cat one (done a few of them) where there is a verse and there is a cat story then bring it to Christian life and then a prayer.
