Tuesday Book Chat | 10 September 2024

Welcome to Tuesday Book Chat.

This is where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week.

Today’s question is:

Do you like to read retellings of famous novels?

We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please join in the conversation by commenting on this post or on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group.

Let’s chat!

This question had me pondering as to what it was meaning. Then it hit like so many people are doing retellings of one of my least favourite books. Pride and Prejudice. Ironically I have liked a few of the retelling before knowing that was what they were. I know there are others that have been retold but right now I can’t think of any. I would love to here some classics that have been retold.

So to answer the question it would depend on the story but probably a yes.

Your turn.

I look forward to reading your comments here or at the FB group.

  1. Hi Jenny, I tend to either love them or hate them, often depending on my thoughts on the tropes in the original story. Acceptable behaviour in previous centuries doesn’t always translate well in a modern day setting.

I am a fan of Pride and Prejudice. A Pride and Prejudice retelling that I enjoyed is Daring Mr. Darcy by Carolyn Miller and Meredith Resce. There is a memorable scene where Lydia does something that’s completely ridiculous and I couldn’t stop laughing because it was so true to the spirit of Jane Austen’s original character. 😊

    1. I recently read a retelling of Emma. After someone explaining the story of Emma that I have never seen It made more sense but I still wasn’t a huge fan.

      1. The retelling should stand on its own as an interesting and complete story without needing to know the original story. Emma is one of Jane Austen’s books that would be hard to retell in a modern setting, imho.
