Welcome to the Australasian Christian Writers Tuesday Book Chat, where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week.
Today’s question is:
Do you read more or less Christian fiction than five years ago?
We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please join in the conversation in a comment on this post or in a comment on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group.
Let’s chat!
When I first read this question, I thought hmm… how can I answer it? For a number of reasons I’m reading less fiction now than I was five years ago. If I look at the overall percentage of books read, I’m reading more Christian fiction now compared to other genres.
What do you think? Are you reading more or less Christian fiction?

I am reading less full stop. I mainly only read Christian fiction but compared to 5 years ago I am reading less al lot of it is still due to pain. I can honestly say this year I have read more non fiction books than fiction and they are mainly devotional books.
Hi Jenny, We can definitely have different seasons when it come to what we’re reading. 🙂
Less but only because life circumstances changed. I still love Christian fiction! 5 years ago I was watching my baby nephew and when he would nap I would read. Can’t read at my job now… Also being single versed being married left me with a lot more time to read!
Hi Melody, yes, I read a lot more when my children were small than I do now. 🙂
About the same amount. I almost exclusively read Christian fiction.
Hi Beth, I mostly read Christian fiction, too. 🙂
I am reading less than I was reading 5 years ago. I did a four year Fine Arts degree and there was no time, and then I didn’t get back into the habit. Now I am writing, and the appetite to read other people’s work is just grow again. Ask me in six months time, and it will be more…
Hi Chrissy, Yes, writing will likely inspire you to read more. 🙂
I found myself reading less as I think I got sick of reading the same thing over and over again . I went through a stage of that’s all I read.
I know what you mean! I consciously try and find books that aren’t that same-old-same-old. I’ve even stopped reading some once-favourite authors because their books became too samey.
Hi Paula, When I had the time to read a lot, I’d jump around between genres to mix up the types of stories I was reading. 🙂
More. I had a bias against Christian fiction because my only experience of the genre (with the exception of the greats like Lewis and Tolkien) had been the ultra-saccharine simplistic answer kind of story. Gah! However I’ve tried again over the last three or four years I’ve discovered some delightful Christian books. The greatest surprise for me was Amish Vampires in Space – by Kerry Neitz. A cross-genre space opera with a clear explanation of the gospel of grace tucked in to the latter part of the book. It was great. And I didn’t realise the author was a Christian. But I have eclectic tastes and on a rainy Sunday afternoon I can also enjoy a Carolyn Miller Regency romance. No vampire aliens in sight…
I still haven’t read Kerry Neitz … it’s on my virtual to-read mountain.
I think you’d enjoy Belinda Blake and the Snake in the Grass by Heather Day Gilbert. She’s a Christian author, but it’s a general market mystery.
Hi Sue, Have you heard ‘the story behind the story’ of Amish Vampires in Space’? It started out as a ‘joke’ title – check out Kerry’s website for more info. 🙂
