Tuesday Book Chat | 12 August 2025

Welcome to Tuesday Book Chat.

This is where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week. As we are a faith-based group the questions refer mainly to Christian fiction or non-fiction.

Today’s question is:

Do you like author contests where you can name a character?

We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please join in the conversation by commenting on this post or on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group. Remember to comment today on Tuesday Book Chat to enter the giveaway.

Let’s chat!

Yes. I have named a couple over the years. Mostly side characters and an animal. Eva Maria Hamilton had a contest for a first name for a hero in her Highland Hearts in the Americas series. I suggested Lachlan and she used it. I like these contests even if my name isn’t used but it feels like the author wants to interact with readers. Even the voting for your favourite name is fun. Normally if you do name a character you are mentioned in the acknowledgements which is always a buzz.

Your turn.

I look forward to reading your comments here or at the FB group.

  1. Yes, I enjoy entering contests to name characters. I think it’s fun. And if you are chosen, it’s exciting because then you are mentioned in the book.

  2. I have some friends who have written books, but the have been mostly nonfiction or devotional, so have not needed to name characters. It would be a privilege to have the opportunity to suggest a name for a character.

    1. I agree it is a privilege. I did have one author Cheryl Wyatt name a chracter after me and another lady so got my first name and her last name. both of us perferred not having our whole name used.

  3. I haven’t done that, but I have been involved in helping choose the cover art of a few books. That wasn’t a contest though.

    1. That would be fun too. I know I have voted on cover art and even names. just being asked to help is fun isn’t it.

  4. I like these contests and have won a few times. I get excited need cause I like to suggest special names of people that are no longer here.

But only once have I ever been contacted again by the author that they completed a book.

    1. I am glad you at least got contacted once. Its a pity it wasn’t more times. I agree its nice to suggest names that are special.
