Tuesday Book Chat | 19 November 2024

Welcome to Tuesday Book Chat.

This is where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week.

Today’s question is:

When a book becomes a movie, do you watch it or skip it?

We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please join in the conversation by commenting on this post or on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group.

Let’s chat!

It probably depends on what the book is. I know some I have looked forward to and others I have avoided. It really depends on the book.

Your turn.

I look forward to reading your comments here or at the FB group.

  1. If I really enjoyed the book, I will likely watch the movie. It’s fun to see how the original story fares with a film adaptation because usually so much of the novel has to be left out.
One example I liked was “Still Alice”. There was a lot left out of the movie but what they used they did really well and the film was very moving.

    1. I remember being so excited to see the When Calls The Heart movie and then being so disappointed when it was nothing like the book. it had bits from the book but it was actually set later with the nice of the main character in the book. The same with the Love Comes Softly movies. they were so different to being nothing like the books by the end. But the series Seven Little Australians was like the book I remember reading

      1. Oh I remember the Seven Little Australians. Pretty sure I still have the book upstairs somewhere. And I remember enjoying the series.

  2. I will often watch the movie, but also often come away feeling dissatisfied by it. One of my favourite books is Little Women, and with all the different versions that have been made I have never been satisfied with their portrayal of Beth.
There is one exception, where I thought the movie was better than the book. That was The Bridge by Karen Kingsbury.

  3. Hi Jenny, It depends on whether or not I’ve read the book— or plan to read the book.

If I’ve read the book and enjoyed it, I’ll watch the movie to see how they adapted the story to the screen. If I DNF’d the book, I might watch the movie to discover what I missed by not finishing the book.

If I plan on reading the book, I’ll delay watching the movie until after I’ve read the book. The movie will likely have spoilers for the book or set up the wrong expectations for the book if the script is very different to the story. My priority is always the reading experience over the movie watching experience. 😊
