Welcome to Tuesday Book Chat. This is where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week.
Today’s question is:
Have you read any novels where a character plays a sport?
We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please join in the conversation by commenting on this post or on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group.
Let’s chat!
I have read a few. Meredith Resce’s Falling for Maddie Grace features AFL football and Maddie is an umpire. Carolyn Miller has Ice hockey books and the second one has speed skating in it. Narelle Atkins’ Her Tycoon Hero has some sailing in it. I know I have read other sports also,
Your turn.
I look forward to reading your comments here or at the FB group.
Hi Jenny, Thanks for mentioning my book. I’ve read a lot of sports romance books over the years. I’m less interested in reading contemporary sports fiction (minus the romance) because I’d rather watch a sports game than read about it.
Amateur sports (games played with friends, etc.) can be more interesting than professional sports because it’s a smaller part of the story and it doesn’t matter whether or not I actually like the sport being played. Some of the books in the Trinity Lakes Romance series – books released in 2023 – include an AFL game among friends that’s played around ANZAC Day that involves many of the characters in the series. I enjoyed reading Meredith’s book – Falling for Maddie Grace.
I can take or leave books with main characters who play professional sports. It depends on the sport and whether or not I like it. The celebrity sports star books can be interesting if the author has put a new spin on what’s now a popular trope.
True. I have to say there are sports I am not a fan off and will not seek them out. If its just for fun that may be different. I don’t like Ice hockey but I did like the movies The Mighty Ducks. I am not a fan of American football cos I don’t get it But I enjoyed the move Remember the Titians and We are Marshall. I am not a fan of either baseball or basketball either so wouldn’t be seeking these books out. (Oh and don’t get me started on watching golf on TV)
But I have enjoyed some of the lesser paid sports and some are fun to read.
