Welcome to Tuesday Book Chat. This is where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week.
Today’s question is:
What’s your favourite period in historical fiction?
We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please join in the conversation by commenting on this post or on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group.
Let’s chat!
I can’t say I have a single favourite period. It can depend on where the book is set. For Australia I like the gold rush era, think Eureka Stockade. I also like WW1 and WW2 as I had relatives who served in both wars. Another reason is for the depression and WW2 I still have the memories mum would talk about.
In America and Canada I like the early years. Mounties in Canada and the homesteading in America. To narrow it down is just too hard.
Your turn.
I look forward to reading your comments here or at the FB group.
Hi Jenny, This isn’t an easy question because I’m happy to read historical fiction set in a range of time periods and locations. I have always liked regency romance, Victorian era and 20th Century historical fiction. I also like Biblical era fiction. All that to say I can’t choose a favourite, lol. 😊
I think it also changes with different countries. I don’t like Regency or the eras of the Ton. I can handle navel or if its the normal people who are not in the upper class. And it’s the same with America I like different eras and it depends where.
I’m currently enjoying stories set from 1900 to around 1930. I’m not a huge fan of WW2 stories unless they are set outside of Germany and occupied areas, and I also struggle with the female characters from before 1900 who bemoan the fact that they are single at 18 and feel like they will never marry.
Though I do enjoy timeslip stories, mostly because it is about someone discovering their family history, which is something I am interested in for myself.
I was trying to work out the time lines. I notice Penny Zeller’s books are not the 18 year old desperate to marry. I too dislike the there life is over if not married. I was thinking When Calls the Heart (tv series) is set in the early 1900’s which has been fun to watch.
I like Westerns and Regency. Plus others, but those always seem to catch my eye the fastest.
I do like Westerns too. These questions are not simple to answer.
