Tuesday Book Chat | Do You Like Illustrated Book Covers?

Welcome to Tuesday Book Chat. This is where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week.

Today’s question is:

Do you like illustrated book covers?

We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please join in the conversation by commenting on this post or on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group.

Let’s chat!

If the question refers to the new Rom Com covers then no I don’t like them very much. On the other hand Valerie Comer uses illustrated book covers for her farm fresh books and they are quite well done and look pretty.

Your turn.

I look forward to reading your comments here or at the FB group. Remember all comments go into the monthly drawer for a gift voucher.

  1. I try to like them because I’m youngish and they are supposed to be cool and fun right? But I have to try to like them, that’s the problem. I prefer something beautiful or wistful or daydreamy without any trying, something I can stare at a long time when I finish reading.

But I do appreciate something different and I guess that’s the whole point, so back to the trying!

    1. I know what you are saying. some other covers are hard to like too. I do like Valerie Comers cos they are a different type of cover. The book I am currently reading is because of the cute cat and dog on the cover. It wasn’t even on my radar but someone hit it in a newsletter and it being cosy mystery I had to buy it. The rom com covers are kinda turning me off wanting to read the genre. I guess I still don’t get what the genre is.

  2. I like the old illustrated covers from when I was a little girl and when my mum was little. Not a big fan of the modern style. It’s okay, sometimes. I prefer photos on newer covers.

    1. I agree. I noticed the one I am reading is an illustration but its more like a painting and its a painting I would have in the house.

  3. As an indie author/reader it’s not so much what I like as what will meet the market expectations and result in sales -which of course hopefully means people reading and engaging. The new romantic comedy genre is fun and light-hearted, and being marketed to readers 18-35. I’m a good deal older, but I’m enjoying some of them. Not all. Some are a bit same old same old. I’ve seen some well designed and cute illustrated covers, and also some that aren’t so well done. The blurb is what clinches the sale for me. And a hope that the writing is engaging. Don’t judge a book by its cover, is a phrase that comes to mind. I’ve bought several new to me authors with beautiful designed realistic covers, and good blurb, and the writing was terrible.

    1. I agree I remember winning a book. The cover was not good and didn’t really portray the story. The book was really good and if not for winning it I would never have read it and learnt more about French history. The more I look at books even on the kindle the more I see are illustrations. Several look like paintings or are a combo of both.
