Welcome to the Australasian Christian Writers Tuesday Book Chat. This is where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week.
Today’s question is:
Do you read widely or mainly stick to favourite genre or categories?
We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please join in the conversation by commenting on this post or on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group.
Let’s chat!
While I have a favourite genre being historical I do read other genres. I enjoy most categories besides horror and heavy suspense. Both are genres that I find scary and tend to avoid. I tend to like a variety of genres depending on my mood. One day it may be historical, then Contemporary, then Amish, cozy mystery. It depends on my mood.
Your turn.

I mostly like books that will educate me in some way, e.g. historical, biographical/autobiographical, humourous, adventurous or just plain entertaining. The majority of my collection are Christian based. e.g. Learn the Bible in 24 Hours by the late Dr. Chuck Missler (he was alive when he wrote it! ;D ) I don’t generally read romance, however my mum passes on her romance books to me so I have got into the habit of reading those when I have nothing of my own to read.
I think most of us fit into the category of reading different things. I know some people who won’t read fiction at all.
I have eclectic tastes within a certain range. I like character driven books with humour, romantic subplots, suspense, mystery, and occasionally some sci-fi or fantasy elements. The ending needs to be positive but not cheesy.
Hi Susan I think many of use have certain books and genres we like. I agree about the ending
Mostly Christian Romance but I also enjoy some suspense, historical & cozy mystery. Stay safe!
Hi Robin. I like most of those genres too. I hope you are safe where you are. We hear the news of your state over here.
I LOVE historical Christian fiction, preferably romantic, but some suspense is good. I rarely read another genre other than my devotionals and the Bible. I read many time periods (I have my favorites) but basically stop reading around 1890-1905, when cars, telephones, etc get involved.
Hi Holly, Historical is my favourite genre but tend to have times when I want a different read so go in cycles. I found at one stage I was reading all the same type of story and just needed something different. (Sometimes it seems stories that are similar come out all at the same time) I think at the time it was abandoned babies or toddlers. While I like children in historical I just needed a totally different type of story.
I like a variety of genres but my favorite is historical. I also enjoy Amish, Contemporary Romance, Mystery, Suspense, YA, etc but all in the Christian category. I don’t really like speculative but I have read a few I surprisingly enjoyed. Have a blessed day.
Hi Lucy, I am with you although I don’t like heavy sense or horror. I also am not a big fan of some women’s fiction. I am not sure a speculative (Not 100% sure what it involves)
Historical fiction has always been my favorite genre, but in the last few years I have read a good bit of contemporary fiction also.
I’ve never been a big mystery/suspense fan but in the past year I have been trying out a few of the top authors in those categories. So far one I didn’t finish and one I loved.
Hi Patty, I don’t mind mystery and light suspense like the Love inspired suspense stories. I do like cozy mysteries. I find a lot of historical fiction often has elements of mystery in them. Some authors do it really well. Mary Connealy is on of them. She often has a bit of light suspense or mystery in the story. Historical fiction has so many subgenres in the category.
I read a cozy mystery by Darlene Franklin that is contemporary that is set around a historical re-enactment.
All over the place in Christian Fiction. I also read clean middle grades with my daughter. Favorite would probably be Biblical Fiction
Welcome Naomi, I am with you. I tend to go in cycles. I am glad you are able to read books with your daughter. One series I really enjoyed was the Camp Club Girls. Its a Christian series starting with a Christian summer camp and 6 girls from different places in America. They are mystery books and each book features one of the girls but always with the other girls in the story. I really loved the stories cos it reminded me of stories I read.
I mostly stick with historical romance, maybe 80-90% of the time. This is mostly Regency, medieval, and late 1800s-early 1900s. Other than that, when I’m in the mood, I enjoy mystery, suspense, or dystopian, especially if they have a little romance. I occasionally read contemporary romance…not my favorite, but I’ve read a few I like.
Thanks for commenting Debbie Historical has a lot of sub categories. I like historical myself and I also have eras I like best too. I do enjoy navel fiction which comes under Regency but it focus more on navel situations. It often depends on my mood too.
