Tuesday Book Chat | Will You Buy a Book if You Don’t Like the Cover?

Welcome to the Australasian Christian Writers Tuesday Book Chat. This is where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week.

Today’s question is:

Will you buy a book if you don’t like the cover?

We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please join in the conversation by commenting on this post or on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group.

Let’s chat!

This is a tough question as the cover has a major part in if I buy a book. Some books I didn’t buy due to thinking the book was in a genre I don’t normally read. One example was a contemporary romance having a very dark cover that made it look like a suspense. I didn’t buy the book as I don’t read a lot of suspense. On the whole the cover matters.

Your turn.

  1. That depends. I usually read the information about the book, usually on the back of the book. If that catches my attention I would buy it.

    1. Thanks for commenting Heather. I agree about the blurb. If I am in a bookstore the cover will play a part although so many you just see the spine so I go for author and title. But when the covers are showing that is what I see first and if I like it then will read the blurb. For me the cover tells me what genre it is likely to be.

  2. I would if it’s by an author I know and like, but otherwise probably not.

  3. I have, if I’ve heard of the book or read the blurb and it sounded good, but chances are if I don’t like the cover I’ll never pick up the book to read the blurb.

    1. Thanks for stopping by Beth. I agree with what you have said.

  4. I will still buy the book if I know the author and have previously enjoyed their books. If the reason I disliked the cover was because it was obviously amateurish and lacked professional polish, I’d be hesitant to buy the book unless I fell in love with the story in the free sample chapters.

    1. I think most of us feel the same with knowing the author or there books.
I find on kindle I don’t go by the cover as much more the blurb or a recommendation.
At a book store if I don’t like the cover I am unlikely to read the blurb. I often look at the cover for clues of the genre. I know I have missed some good books because of the cover and later finding out the book was in a genre I liked but looked like suspense or a dark subject. I like light suspense not heavy suspense or horror.
