A Devotional | Eternal Glorious Rest

Since May 2014 God has been teaching me about rest and I experienced a new lesson the other day…..

It was a busy day but a good day. I was able to bless a friend with a homemade lunch and it was wonderful to catch up. Then I was able to help with the pickup of a much needed item, a study desk for my son’s girlfriend. A bit of a rest and then our son drove me to pick up hubby from the airport. A catch-up with him and then some much needed sleep, but just before I closed my eyes I picked up my nightly devotion “Earth Psalms” by Francine Rivers. As I read it taught me another lesson in rest, explaining that the current of Jesus’ love is leading me onward, homeward to His glorious rest above. I’m reminded that no matter how much I struggle with rest this side of heaven, I’m promised an eternal glorious rest.

Francine Rivers highlighted the hymn “O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus”, here are part of the lyrics:

Oh, the deep, deep love of Jesus—
Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free—
Rolling as a mighty ocean
In its fullness over me!
Underneath me, all around me
Is the current of His love—
Leading onward, leading homeward
To His glorious rest above.

The day after I started drafting this up, I had a list of chores to do but I took time out to rest. As the rain poured down I snuggled in bed and read, ‘what a luxury, what a blessing it is to take time out’ I thought to myself. And I smiled as I realised just how far God has bought me, previously I saw rest as an inconvenience, I felt trapped and like life was passing me by, but now I see rest’s value, I appreciate it, I don’t fight anymore, when I need a sit down I relax, when I need a lie down I hop into bed and when I need a nap I thank God for the space to do it.

How do you rest?

Do you incorporate it into everyday life or set aside big spaces or rest?

Do you struggle to find time to rest?

Here’s a prayer you can join me in praying:

Thank You God for the promise of eternal glorious rest. Teach me how to incorporate small and big rest moments into my life now. Thank You for the promise that I will receive the rights to an unshakable kingdom. Help me to be extremely thankful and offer You the purest worship that delights Your heart. I acknowledge that I have received God’s grace and I lay my life down again in absolute surrender. God, help me to please You as I serve You in awe and with tender devotion.

Please let me know if this has helped you, I’d love to hear from you.

Many blessings,

Keona

My prayer is inspired by Hebrews 12:28 TPT and the footnote: “we have received grace to serve and we please God in awe and tender devotion(submission).”

  1. I would say I struggle to remember to rest! Even if my body is still, my mind is ticking over. Thanks for this encouragement.
