Book Review | Her Unlikely Hero by Valerie Comer and Giveaway

Today I will be reviewing Her Unlikely Hero by Valerie Comer book one of the Easter in Gilead series.

Book description

Redemption and second chances abound in this small-town, single-mom romance with a former bad boy set at Easter.
Connor Hamelin’s Kansas farm boss offers wages through the winter if he’ll try out for the annual passion play. Connor’s been drifting, but sticking around sounds good. Figuring he can channel Judas, he auditions… and is cast as Jesus. Ugh, but maybe he’ll finally understand all the religious nuts in his life.

Single mom Zoey Matthews helps in the wardrobe department for the local passion play as well as participating in crowd scenes with her young daughter. Zoey might be intrigued by the unlikely guy cast as Jesus in this year’s production, but she’s not looking for romance, especially not with an unbeliever too similar to her bad-boy ex.

Connor doesn’t deserve a chance to make amends for his past nor another chance at love. He definitely doesn’t deserve the forgiveness of the Savior he’s portraying… but God is a God of redemption and second chances.

Her heart longs for a hero. He’s no one’s idea of a champion.

Visit Gilead, Kansas, and enjoy five romances behind the scenes at the town’s annual passion play! Five beloved authors of Christian contemporary romance have teamed together to present Easter in Gilead. Read all five for a rich experience.

My Review

This is the first book of the Easter in Gilead series and sets up the whole series. I enjoyed this book and the premise of the series.

Gilead Bible College has a yearly passion play and for Connor to stay in Kansas over winter and still have his job in spring he needs to audition for the play. Connor decides to audition for Judas. Zoey is a single mom working in the costume department of the play which is where they meet. Both have lots of baggage and a past. Very similar in different ways.

Zoey became a Christian 4 years prior due to the passion play but at this point Connor is a non-believer. Also, Zoey has an adorable 3-year-old girl Wren who likes to steal scenes. A few scenes with the children are so adorable.

Connor gets the role of Jesus but doesn’t understand the full story. He has made friends with some of the actors and workers of the play and the interactions are good. The explaining of the gospel feels very natural and was well done. There is an attraction between Connor and Zoey but she is very cautious. I like that there wasn’t easy fixes but instead lots of soul searching. They knew the consequences and had to work through that to move forward.

There is so much in this book I would love to talk about, but I don’t review past the first few chapters. I believe readers should find out what happens next on their own. There were times I was frustrated with one or both characters, but it was more I knew the full picture. They didn’t and had to work though it themselves. I enjoyed the outcomes and am looking forward to book 2 in the series which I hope to review in the next week or so.

  1. Hi Jenny, Thanks for sharing your insightful review of Valerie’s book. I appreciated seeing Connor’s redemption journey in the story. I’m currently writing the last book in the Easter in Gilead series and enjoying the Kansas setting in the shared story world. 😊

    1. Thanks for commenting. There is so much in this story that I cant talk about because I don’t give stories away. But I do love Connors redemption Journey and I love Zoey’s too, yes I was frustrated but I also knew why she felt like she did anything else would have been a quick fix and not true to life.

  2. I have never been to a Easter Passion Play but would love to go.
