Have you ever found yourself lost for words? Thoughts bubble up inside your mind and around your heart, yet you can’t get the words to come out. They are stuck; deeply felt but unspoken.
I found myself in this state during worship at church over the weekend. There was so much running through my mind. I couldn’t still my thoughts. Round and round they went. Spiraling. I wanted so much to get the words out. To speak them to the Lord and release them from my head and my heart.
But I couldn’t. I couldn’t pull together a coherent sentence. The only thing I could get out was, ‘Jesus.’
Just, Jesus.
Over and over, that was my prayer as I stood. That was all my heart could utter.
Just, Jesus.
As I reflected on this later in the day, I was reminded that just His name alone is sufficient. We can over complicate prayer sometimes and think we need to be eloquent. We may think we need to be proper and put together. We don’t need to have the words because He already knows what’s inside our hearts and minds. We don’t need a poem or a psalm or a long prayer to present to Him. None of those things are bad; there is a place for all of them and more. If they help guide your prayer time, that is great.
But God doesn’t ask for any of that. God asks us to come to Him with an open and sincere heart. But sometimes, all our heart is capable of is whispering the name, ‘Jesus.’ And that name alone is enough.
Power in His name.
In Philippians 2:8-11 we read the following:
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
His name is above every other name. There is no name more powerful. No name more mighty.
To calm any storm.
To heal any illness or heartache.
To bring breakthrough to any situation.
He hears us.
However you pray, Jesus hears you. But when you don’t have the words; when you can’t articulate what your heart is feeling, know that simply uttering His name is enough. The name that is unmatched in power. The name that is salvation. The name that is hope. The name that is above every other name. We just need to believe that the beautiful and glorious name of Jesus is enough. Because He is enough. He always has been. Always will be. Jesus. Just, Jesus, is more than enough.
Beautiful words, Leila. And you’re absolutely right: words can be a gift, but they can also be unnecessary. Every sigh, every tear, every breath is a prayer. Because he is enough.
Amen, Steph. He is enough. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I totally agree Leila. Sometimes when I can’t find ‘the words’ and I just call out ‘Jesus’, I’m drawn into the deepest and most intimate connection to God. He knows my needs/requests so I don’t have to discuss them with Him. I just bask in the moment and worship Him in Spirit where words are unnecessary. I cherish those moments.
Absolutely, Susan. He knows exactly what we need. And I totally agree, those moments of intimacy are beautiful and moments to cherish. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Thank you. A good reminder with lots to ponder.
You’re welcome, Dienece. Blessings to you.
