DEVOTIONAL: Take refuge

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” – Psalm 91

I love the imagery of God being a shelter and a refuge. When I read this verse, I imagine someone running straight into a tower and sheltering from a storm. Or a child running into the arms of their parent and being fully embraced and sheltered. I imagine peace, comfort, and safety. God, like a mighty tower, offers us the same safety and security. His arms, mighty and powerful, are always opened wide for us, bringing gentle comfort.

Safe and secure

In God’s arms we find peace and protection for our hearts. When our hearts are breaking from another heartache or betrayal, we can find comfort in His embrace. When life has thrown yet another challenge our way, it is in God’s arms that we can run to for safety. Whilst walking with Jesus and being in His will isn’t always the easiest place to be, it is the best place to be. Why? Because if God leads us to it, He will lead us through it. If we are following the prompting and leading of the Holy Spirit, no matter how hard our situation may be, we can be certain that He won’t forsake us or forget us. He will be with us every step of the way.

Confidence in the unseen

There are some seasons where we can’t always see what God is doing. We don’t always feel His presence. There have been times when I haven’t been able to hear or feel God at all. But just like we have confidence that being inside a tower will shelter us from a storm, we can have confidence that God will care for us and shelter us in His love. This won’t always look like an easy life. This might also look like loss and heartache. But earthly pain doesn’t mean God isn’t working. It doesn’t mean that He doesn’t care. He is working, and He does care. We just don’t always see it.

Rest in His arms

When we put our trust in the Most High God, the One that created the heavens and the earth, we will find rest for our souls. The shadow of the Almighty brings restoration. It brings peace. It brings love and strength. God is for you. He loves you and wants to be your refuge and hiding place. The place you run to when life is trying to beat you down. In life, we will walk through valleys and over mountain tops. We will have emotional upheaval. We will have seasons of joy and seasons of tears. But in all that, God is with us. He is our shelter in the storm and our peace in the chaos. He will hold our hand through it all.

Today, can I encourage you to make time to rest in His presence. Stop, pause and take shelter in His love. Let His abundant and endless love pour out over you and into you. Let Him be your refuge and let his shelter from the world.

Reflection

When have you felt the peace of God cover you?
