Fiction Friday | Review of The Breakup Project by Carolyn Miller

Today I am reviewing The Breakup Project by Carolyn Miller

New Year. New Resolution. New Romance?

What happens when the best-laid plans break a friendship?

As the twin sister of hockey’s hottest forward, romance-loving Bree Karlsson is used to being ignored, leading to a New Year’s resolution to not date any athlete in her attempt to find Mr. Right. But what happens when the man who might prove to be her personal Mr. Darcy is her brother’s hockey-playing best friend?

Mike Vaughan might be happy playing in Boston, but he’d be even happier if Bree could one day see him as more than a good friend. He agrees to help Bree with a special project in the hope she’ll finally see him as something more. But when a misunderstanding ends in a Valentine’s Day disaster, Bree realizes that her breakup project may have broken her friendship with Mike in two. Can she ever redeem her mistake?

This friends-to-more romance has plenty of heart, humor, and swoon-worthy kisses in this first book of the Original Six, a sweet, slightly sporty Christian contemporary romance series.

My Review

Another good book by Carolyn Miller. The Breakup Project is the first in the series of “The Original Six”. You may wonder the series name but its the original six Ice Hockey teams.

Let me start with I am not an Ice hockey fan due to know really understanding it (except the Mighty Ducks). But you don’t need to know anything about Ice hockey as while it’s a feature the book isn’t all about sport.

The book stars Bree who is the twin of Brent a Ice Hockey star and his best friend Mike also an Ice Hockey star. Bree is tired living in Brent’s shadow never knowing if people want to date her to get closer to Brent or for herself. Brent has also warned Mike not to date Bree. So at New Years Eve Bree makes a resolution not to date Ice Hockey players.

Mike on the other hand really does like Bree but she sees him as a friend only. We see the interaction between the too as Mike understands Bree more than she realises. In the beginning Brent is making some choices that are not the best. This is where the breakup project starts and brings the two together to save Brent.

I can relate to Bree in many ways we see Bree wanting to be her own person not her brother’s sister. Bree has a job she loves looking after children and is doing what she is good at. Her brother thinks she could do more but he doesn’t really know her. I myself had a brother who was good at sport, academically, and captain at the school. I was none of these but teachers would say oh I taught your brother he was so good. To be constantly compared when you are so different is hard on a child. Being introduced as someone’s sibling can lead to low self-esteem. This happens to Bree in some ways.

Mike on the other hand totally understands Bree and supports what she is doing. As the book goes on we see this in many ways. I won’t go into details as that is what you need to read yourselves.

We also have a cast of interesting people in the book, Neighbours, Granny V to name a few.  Good read and can’t wait for the next book.

Do you like books featuring a sport?

  1. Oh, I’m so glad you enjoyed reading The Breakup Project, Jenny. I always hope readers find the characters in my books relatable and real. And thanks for mentioning that it’s not too sporty, for the non hockey readers out there!
    Happy new year to you!

    1. Your welcome. I think you have the formula is right it actually explains to a non ice hockey person some things we didn’t know like trading, (I know it happens in sports but you don’t really think about it cos in Aussie sports like Cricket and Football it doesn’t happen mid season).

  2. Hi Jenny, great review! And I agree re. your thoughts on the hockey/sports content. There’s no assumed hockey knowledge and the professional hockey world is the setting/backdrop for the real action (romance etc.) in the story. I’m looking forward to reading more books in the series! 😊
