God’s Perfect Timing

I am grateful for perfect timing. An unexpected situation recently brought my husband and me to New York City. Due to the serious nature of the trip, I did not follow my usual practice of planning sightseeing excursions, activities, and shopping. While researching the area of our hotel, I discovered that we would be within walking distance of Central Park. I know from previous trips to the city that Central Park offers a long list of activities. When I consulted an interactive map of Central Park, I learned it would be a perfect timing for one memorable sight. Cherry blossoms bloomed in April and May.

The map showed where cherry blossoms were in full bloom. These trees dotted the city, but I wanted to be surrounded by delicate flowers. By following the map’s guidance, I hoped to make the most of the perfect timing of being in the right place at the right time. I set my sights on the areas that promised an abundance of cherry blossoms.

I know little about the classifications of cherry trees except that two particular species grow in Central Park: the Kwanzan Cherry and the Yoshino Cherry. However, I appreciate that the bloom’s timing varies from year to year because of weather and other factors. The narrow window of opportunity that coincided with my travel plans excited me.

One afternoon, standing under the umbrella-like branches of the trees that rained petals from the breeze, I felt blessed. The wonder of God’s creative power filled my heart. Strangers around me also delighted in the spectacular display of beauty. We knew the season of the blossoms would be fleeting, and no one wanted to waste a moment.

I like to think it pleases God when we take pleasure in His creation. Of flowers, Jesus said, “Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these” (Luke 12:27). Even on the same tree, the blossoms are unique. We may not be able to appreciate all the subtle differences with the naked eye. Still, the differences complement each other, making a scene that gives us delight.

At that moment, I stood under the pink cherry blossom trees and felt joy from the blessing of perfect timing. We prefer when God’s timing suits our plans. We celebrate when results match our expectations. On the other hand, do we remain faithful when God’s timing does not meet our demands? We miss a bus, train, or plane, making us late for an important event. Or we pray, but the answer is no. Tragedy strikes, and we look to God as Martha did when Lazarus died. “Where were You?” we cry out through disappointment and pain.

Have you ever experienced a disappointment that ultimately became an experience of perfect timing? You were late for or missed an important event, but the new path led to a better opportunity. God answered no to your prayer, but later you understood His wisdom.

That’s why we must wait on the Lord (Psalm 27:14). He knows the past, present, and future. He knows what is best for us. Nothing surprises Him; therefore, we can trust His perfect timing.

  1. Thank you for sharing. I love how creation speaks to me, shouts His praise (Psalm 66:4). I too have been comforted by the sight of blossoms, they are a reminder to me that winter does end and so I gaze at them and hold tight to the promise that my ‘winter’ season will indeed end. Blessings xx
