Tuesday Book Chat | 9 April 2024

Welcome to Tuesday Book Chat. This is where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week.

Today’s question is:

Do you prefer covers with photos or illustrations?

We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please join in the conversation by commenting on this post or on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group.

Let’s chat!

Again it depends. I do prefer photos even if its more scenery than people like the Trinity Lakes covers. Jenny Glazebrooks looks so good with the squirrel. Some illustrations are good like in Cozy Mystery. On the other hand I don’t like the new look for rom coms with blank faces. To me they don’t looks good like the Amish dolls who have blank faces they just look strange to me.

Your turn.

I look forward to reading your comments here or at the FB group.

  1. I’m waaaay more likely to pick up a book with an illustrated cover. Particularly ‘arty’ or whimiscal ones that have me guessing at the genre. They’re often literary, which I like to read.
Have to admit, I don’t like photos of scenery or people, but to each his own.

    1. I also guess it depends on the cover. Like yours looking at it now I guess its illustrated but my first thought was photo.
Both have positives and negatives. And each cover will have the same reactions some love it some won’t

      1. Yes, I wouldn’t necessarily be drawn to my cover to be honest.
However, as an author you have to choose the kind of cover that goes with the genre and mine’s what you might call Australian fiction with a bit of mystery :o)
I still think I’d like to try a more illustrated cover next time.

  2. It really depends on what it is. Either way can work for some books, while others tend to need either photo or illustration.

  3. Hi Jenny, I’m more interested in knowing if the cover signals the genre. Romcoms are more likely to have an illustrated cover, but I know trends change and illustrated covers are becoming more popular in other genres. I really don’t like the large blank cartoon faces on romance covers that aren’t supposed to have a creepy vibe.
