Tuesday Book Chat | Do You Enjoy Novels With Military Themes?

Welcome to Tuesday Book Chat. This is where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week.

Today’s question is:

Do you enjoy novels with military themes?

We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please join in the conversation by commenting on this post or on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group.

It can depend on storyline. Cheryl Wyatt writes some books using Para Jumpers but a lot of the story is when they are not working. She also has another series which has mostly retired military people working in a medical center.

  1. I’ve only ever read one book with a military theme and that was “The Diary Of Ann Frank” I loved it, one of my favourite books. Oh actually I do recall reading books on Adolf Hitler and World war 2 but that was over twenty five years ago! I don’t remember any of it now. Generally I don’t gravitate towards military themed stories

    1. Thanks for commenting Lissa, Military theme can also be military people but not necessary in a war zone. Like a peacekeeping force or training exercises. or as in Cheryl’s books its about the PJ’s and they do go on missions but the story is more the mateship (they are all living in the same town). I have read a few set in WW2 also that are more on the sabotage, or one was pilots based in England and flying missions. It doesn’t have to be heavy on the war side. It may even be a NCIS or Jag type story.

  2. I don’t mind them because it’s nice to get into the psyche of people in the military and understand that world more. I don’t go out of my way to buy them but it’s not a deterrent either when I’m debating buying a book.

    1. Thanks for commenting. I think it also depends what the story is. I know I liked reading books set in the Civil war and I guess they are military themed but it wasn’t what I thought of when doing the post (I get the questions to put up so don’t prepare before I put them up). Military theme could be war, peacekeeping, or it could be training etc it really is a broad subject.

  3. It’s not so much that I seek out military themes to read or write about–but when one loves history, wars and simply part of the story–sadly. World War II books are extremely popular right now and I have read several good ones, including The Paris Library and All the Light We Cannot See. the Celtic Cross series, which is my current writing project, includes Scotland’s battle for freedom at Bannockburn King Billy’s victory in Ireland at the Battle of the Boyne.

    1. That is so true and thats true with history. I remember reading about the different battles due to books but it wasn’t the reason I bought the books (Some are Gilbert Morris’s and in the House of Winslow series). Others it was part of the story.

  4. It depends on how graphic the descriptions are.
At the moment I’m most interested in World War 1 stories, though I have been enjoying Mike Hollow’s Blitz Detective series.

    1. Thats so true and again the question is open to interpretation. Military could be just having a base as the setting or in a war or battle. I enjoyed some of an author of WW2 books I forget her name.

  5. I don’t seek them out, but I have read some great novels set during times of war, such as ‘The Book Thief’, ‘All the Light We Cannot See’, ‘Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet’. I’ve also read some romantic suspense novels that include military personnel, such as Dee Henderson’s ‘Uncommon Heroes’ series and I liked that.

    1. I agree I don’t really seek them out but there are some that are really good. And I read the question different. I do like some books I have read set in different wars as it can give an insight. Like the ones that show what the women did in working in factory and having victory gardens etc.

  6. I really enjoy Christian novels with a military theme. I have several dear friends who are combat veterans and I have huge respect for those who serve our country (and the US and UK) in the defence forces. I like to see these defenders and warriors written about in a positive way, and I especially like Christian military romance!
