Tuesday Book Chat | Do You Have a Favourite Genre or Book Category?

Welcome to Tuesday Book Chat. This is where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week.

Today’s question is:

Do you have a favourite genre or book category?

We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please join in the conversation by commenting on this post or on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group.

Let’s chat!

I am partial to historical fiction, I guess I like reading about a different era. However it can depend on my mood what I want to read. Currently while not reading much I am really enjoying mystery. I do avoid heavy suspense and horror and mostly read Christian fiction.

Your turn.

  1. I love historical fiction too – and mystery. I especially like being transported to an exotic culture with beautiful food or clothing or design. I also like anything French. I used to love those books about renovating a house in a rural French village!

    1. I love learning new things. At high school we were put in bands, A B C. A did history and all those sorts of subjects (brighter people). B did most of the subjects but things like language instead of one for the year different ones and was a total waste of a year. Band C they did easier subjects. If you were in A you would probably go to Uni, Band B you could go either way and C no chance. I went as C but ended up a B when I started High school. It also meant you probably had the trouble makers in your class and I did so it meant several teachers taught to the lower level and over half the class stayed in the won’t go to uni group. By year 9 it also meant we had no chance of doing things like History, biology, higher maths etc. We did subjects that covered little bits but not enough to move up. I would have loved to do history and American history so reading I have learnt so much. (They changed how they did things after our year)

  2. I always favour Historical Romance but as I’m partway through Meredith’s Louella’s series and having a good laugh-plus a bit of suspense, I guess I’m open to anything new and fresh, whatever genre. 🙂

    1. Historical can contain a little mystery or suspense where as contemporary is more restrictive and needs to follow genres more.
I like most genres except horror or heavy suspense and some women’s fiction (especially if its miss labeled).

  3. Really? A favourite genre? Only one?

I love Regency fiction particularly if it reflects Austen. I like so many of the different historical romance genres to be found in Christian Fiction. I like Australian Christian fiction, which comes in various flavours.

    1. You can pick more as I think we all have more then one we really like.

  4. I love mystery/suspense.
I’m also really enjoying books with multiple time periods when the story of the past and present are woven together.

    1. I like mystery and light suspense like LIS. I haven’t read many with multipule time periods mostly where there are connecting books with an item through generations.

  5. I’ve a lovely collection of genres in my possession. 🙊 I’m into contemporary romance, romcoms and women’s fiction. I also like a darker, angsty read occasionally…. so long as there’s a happy(ish) ending. I’m big on WWII and books in this time (there’s something tragic and heartwrenching yet still hopeful in that era). Romantic suspense and time travel are fun to read too.

    1. Thanks for commenting Sheridan, Its like saying who’s your favourite pet or child. It can sometimes be easier to say what you prefer not to read. While I really like historical I have times I want to read others right now I am about to start a book for middle school students because it looks so good.

      1. So true, Jenny! For me, I think it’s more about the quality of the writing. I love watching sci-fi but struggle to read it. However, last year I read a sci-fi/dystopian romance and enjoyed it!

Oooh, middle school books can be great too. I have 5 daughters and have read a variety of books in search of finding what they like (other than the 6yo). My eldest (16) is huge on suspense and fantasy, but my 14yo likes anything you hand her. My 13yo is more into sweet stories… and the 10yo thinks dragons and ninjas are cool (as does the eldest!), so we have an eclectic library here! 🤣

        1. the book I am reading is from M L Tarpley, Maylie and the Maze. She has a new one out also. I am just starting but I think its time slip.

I agree with sci fi sometimes its better on tv than in books but some are done well.

  6. Hi Jenny, Great question! Contemporary Christian Romance (CCR) is my all time favourite. 50% plus of my reading is CCR books. I do read other genres, especially Christian fiction and the romance sub-genres. I enjoy Biblical fiction and cozy mysteries. For historical fiction, I usually prefer historical romance or romantic elements in the story. Lately I haven’t read much suspense/thriller, although I do like reading these genres (especially romantic suspense and romantic thrillers) if there’s not too much graphic violence. My biggest problem is I have too many books in my tbr list and not enough reading time! 😊

    1. I think we all like different genres. I don’t like the thrillers myself.

  7. My all-time favorite genre is Regency but right on its heels is Historical Romance, then Contemporary Romance or Suspense. I usually take a hard pass on fantasy/syfy and never read horror.

  8. Thanks for stopping by. I like some fantasy but it does depend what it is. Most I have read are more children’s.
