DEVOTIONS: Still

Still.

Something God has been working on teaching me is around the word, still.

It has long been a word that I have associated with being still before God; sitting at his feet and waiting on him to speak or move. Being still and trusting that He will do something in the current season.

But what God has been showing me is that the word still is a reflection of himself. It’s a reminder that He is STILL God.

He is STILL moving.

He is STILL working all things together for the good of that that love him and are called for his purposes.

He is STILL moving mountains for us.

He is STILL sovereign.

He STILL loves me.

He is STILL God.

Fixing our eyes.

At any given moment in time, there is chaos in our world. Whether it be in our personal lives, or in the world around us, there is some form of challenge that can shift our eyes off God and set fear in our hearts.

In Psalm 46:10, He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

God is telling us that He is STILL God. No matter what is happening in or around us, God is still God. And that means that He is still more than able to do what He’s promised He would.

Remembering God

So how do we remember this when life is hard or challenging or our prayers are going unanswered? Well for me, I need to physically do something to remind me, and so I have been writing out reminders each day of who God is. The picture below is from my journal and is an entry that I make most days.

It is nothing revolutionary, it is just a simple reminder of who God is. But it allows me to set my eyes and my heart on God, not on what is happening in me or around me. It allows me to shift my dialogue with God from one of pleading to one of praise for who He is.

I also have a prayer on my laptop that reminds me of His might and my need to trust him:

Reminders may look different for you, and that is okay. It is not about the how, it is about doing something that will remind us that God is STILL God and STILL fulfilling all His promises.

Wherever you may be today, I pray that you can stop and remind yourself that God is STILL who He says He is. His promises are STILL yes and amen. He is STILL the God of miracles and is STILL El Roi, the God who sees (Genesis 16:13). And He is STILL the God who loves you with an everlasting love.
