Welcome to Tuesday Book Chat.
This is where we encourage book lovers to answer our bookish question of the week. As we are a faith-based group the questions refer mainly to Christian fiction or non-fiction.
Today’s question is:
Do you prefer reading in silence or with background noise/music?
We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please join in the conversation by commenting on this post or on the blog post shared in our Australasian Christian Writers Facebook Group. Remember to comment today on Tuesday Book Chat to enter the giveaway.
Let’s chat!
I tend to have background noise when reading, often its the tv. Most of my reading is done at night with the tv on. Sometimes I will listen is quiet.
Your turn.
I look forward to reading your comments here or at the FB group.

I like quiet while reading (and writing).
Most of my reading is done in the evening in bed. I read in silence until my eyes droop, then I go to sleep.
There are times I like silence but have been probably reading listening to music or watching tv etc since I was little.
Silence. Background noise can distract me.
I think for me it depends on the background noise.
If I’m at home, silence.
When I’m at work, I can’t escape the background noise of children in the playground, but I’m pretty good at tuning out the noise to focus on the book.
Im like that when watching tv. I can read watching football or other sport and while I still am aware of what is happening I will miss quite a bit when reading
I read better with silence. If there is noise, it takes me long to read because it is harder for me to focus.
I can understand that. I need certain noise to read.
Hi Jenny, This is an interesting question because it depends entirely on the book. If I’m hooked into the story (or totally absorbed in the book content for nonfiction) a bomb could drop and I’d still be reading, lol. If I’m distracted by noise, it’s a clue that I’m either not in the mood to read the book (which can happen even if it’s an excellent read) or the book content isn’t holding my attention and I’m thinking about the (temporary to go-back-later or permanent) DNF option.
sounds interesting. I do like having noise around.
